The Lairgate in Beverley (01482) 882141

What can I tell you about our hotel?  As you would expect, it is like so much in East Yorkshire - unexpected.

It was certainly built in part before 1700 and for very many years was a fine town house with remarkable hall and staircase.  Actually it is a number of old houses now joined together.  The story is that the Mayor of Beverley ran his solicitors practice from 32 Lairgate - his home.  His wife was less enthusiastic and eventually managed to get him to build an office next door.  Strangely this building was still being used as a solicitors office, and also as the registrars office 180 years later, when it became part of the hotel - look out for the room that was the original 'strong room' which still incorporates the massive safe door.

The Lairgate is right in the centre of Beverley, midway between St. Mary's and the Minster: it is in a conservation area and is a listed Georgian building.

The family that owns the Lairgate also has the Bell in Driffield - a hotel of very similar age, with a very different but remarkable history.  You would be unwise not to visit the unforgettable Driffield Spa which forms part of the Bell.
